So, you've had your garden landscaped by a professional and it looks great. But then, a sudden realisation creeps in... keeping it that way is all down to you.

Whether you're an avid horticulturist, or more of a windowsill gardener, the pressure of maintaining an entire garden after a landscaping makeover can feel overwhelming.

Fear not! The Real Green Gardener is here to help. We're bringing you our top tips for garden upkeep post-landscaping, making it easier than ever to keep your outdoor space looking 100%.

Remember - if you need extra help, the professionals are only ever a call away!

1. Stay on top of pruning

Unkempt shrubs and trees are one of the first things that can turn a garden from looking neat and tidy to slightly dishevelled. The key is in the details: neat hedgerows and trees will help create crisp borders that keep the garden looking freshly updated. Similarly, tidying up dead leaves, debris and fallen branches will all make a big difference.

2. Keep weeds at bay

Weeds can quickly take over your garden and ruin the perfect finish achieved by the landscapers. Regularly weed your garden, creating a schedule if necessary, to keep it looking clean and healthy.

Top tip: Consider using mulch to help suppress weed growth.

3. Take note of individual plant needs

Having loads of plants is an amazing way to create a lively gardenscape. However, not all plants are created equal: some will require more specialised care than others. Research the plants in your garden, or check back in with your landscapers, to find out what plants they used and what individual care they might need.

For example, some plants may need covering in winter, fertilising in spring, or increased watering during summer.

4. Replant annual and biennial plants

Annual plants only have a one-year cycle before they die out. Biennial plants die out after a two-year cycle. Perennial plants live for several years.

Work out which plants in your garden will need replanting, so that you can prepare the ground for them and plant them in the correct month. This will keep your garden and colour scheme looking exactly as it did when it was professionally landscaped.

5. Enlist professional help

Sometimes, the easiest way to maintain your garden exactly as you want it is to enlist the help of professionals. Instead of spending valuable time working out how to properly care for your plants, and investing hours in garden maintenance, you can easily get a team of experts to do it for you.

If you’re not a passionate gardener, or if even if you are but you don’t have the time, using a professional service will let you enjoy your outdoor space in all its glory, without requiring a large time investment on your part.
