Top 10 tips to Prepare your Garden for Spring

Now that the sun is starting to peep out, you’re probably thinking about ways to improve your garden for the upcoming months. Springtime means the arrival of new flowers and bulbs, and we know preparation is key to nurturing your garden for the brighter days ahead.
In line with our ten-year anniversary (which took place on 2nd April), we felt it was fitting to give you our top ten tips to help get your garden ready for the spring season.

Tip 1: Spring cleaning
Provided you regularly clean your garden, spring cleaning shouldn’t take too long. Be sure to collect any dead leaves and stalks that could grow bacteria and compromise and infect your plants.
To help with your spring cleaning, we offer Green Waste Disposal Services to help properly dispose of your garden waste, preventing any harmful gases from entering the atmosphere.
Tip 2: De-weed
As part of your soil preparation plans, you should look to remove as many weeds as you can that have grown during the winter months. This may involve weedkiller, but this may be possible by hand – as long as you can pull them out with all of their roots still intact!
Tip 3: Compost
Soil preparation also gives you the chance to use compost that has been maturing over the winter months. The bottom layer of your compost pile makes for perfect mulch for your flower beds.
Tip 4: Order summer bulbs and seeds
It’s also worth taking the time to order your flowering bulbs and seeds ready for summertime. There are a variety of options for your garden this year, so we’d recommend you take the time to work out what you’d like to grow in your garden and where – some plants like the sun, some like the shade, some like a mix of both!
Tip 5: Flower care
To get your plants ready, you may want to consider re-potting or trimming your flowers to encourage new growth. We provide an array of potting designs for your plants, as illustrated below. Call us today to arrange a quote.

For instance, roses need to be pruned in the spring following the seasonal end of frosty mornings. To help, we offer a full garden maintenance service including the pruning of shrubs and planting using environmentally friendly gardening techniques.
Tip 6: Net protection for your fruit
You should be mindful that birds or insects will be enticed by any fruit that’s growing on your trees and bushes. To combat this, we propose protective netting where possible.
Tip 7: Remove garden pests
Pests are a gardener’s nemesis. Thankfully, there are lots of natural ways that you can deter pests from your flowering plants this year, including the use of natural oils. From rosemary to lavender, the smell of these oils can help to keep insects and other pests at bay without harmful chemicals.
Tip 8: Garden tool clean
It’s best to clean your garden tools to keep them any germs away. We recommend oiling and sharpening your garden knives to help efficiently trim your plants.
Tip 9: Garden furniture maintenance
Your garden furniture may need some updating, especially if neglected over the winter. Plastic can be washed with soapy water and a sponge. Timber, on the other hand may need a bit more attention, including the use of oil and sealants.
Tip 10: Fence and gate repair
Along with the garden furniture, your gates and fences may also need some work. This could include another coat of paint or varnish, or even replacements for any broken segments in the panels.
